Roofing Insurance News - Roofing Firm Fined After Employee Fall

Working at height, whether it be roofing, scaffolding or another contracting trade, can be a hazardous and significantly increases the risk of injury to employees (Employers Liability) or members of the Public (Public Liability Insurance)

As such, Insurance for Roofing Contractors is a specialist area where managing risk effectively to reduce propensity to claim has a positive effect on premium levels.  Clearly the opposite is also true in instances where risk management is poor, or a previous claim has occurred.

Gateshead Roofing Firm Fined After Serious Employee Injury

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) reported that they have successfully prosecuted a Gateshead based guttering and roofing firm, following an incident at a warehouse on 12th June 2012. The company was fined £4,000 and ordered to pay £1,600 costs after a 61 year-old worker fell through a roof whilst sealing roof lights to make them watertight.

He was hospitalised for a week after fracturing two vertebrae in his spine and a fractured pelvis after falling through one of the roof lights, then through a suspended ceiling before landing on the floor of a corridor inside the building

Gateshead Magistrates Court found C Grant (Roofing and Guttering) Ltd guilty of breaching of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 at a hearing on 31st July 2014. After the hearing HSE Inspector Robert Hirst said:

“This was a wholly avoidable incident that resulted in serious injury to this man.”

“C Grant (Roofing and Guttering) Ltd failed to meet these simple requirements.”

Health & Safety Risk Assessments Are Vital

The court heard that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation had identified serious safety failings and that the firm had failed to ensure that the repair was carried out in a safe manner.

Managing risk to clients, the public and your employees is critical to your roofing business, particularly as a result of the increased legislation and regulation.  A robust Health and Safety and Risk Management programme is a vital tool in reducing risk (and in turn your Roofers Insurance premiums). Your Insurance Company or Broker should also be able to provide documentation and support around best practice and risk assessments, we would also suggest visiting the excellent HSE Working at Height Website for more information.

The Risks of Working at Height

Incidents involving falls whilst working at height represent one of the most common workplace accidents.  The HSE confirmed that, since 2001, an average of 50 people a year are killed as a result of a fall from height and a further 8,702 are seriously injured.

Hirst confirmed:

“Work at height is a high risk activity and falls from height remain the single biggest cause of death and serious injury in the construction industry.

"It is therefore essential that all such work is properly planned, managed and monitored, and carried out in a safe manner by ensuring that all necessary precautions are taken to prevent falls and protect workers.”
